International ICT Competitions Ill for Increasing the Quality of Secondary Education – Final report
The Mendel Secondary School in Nový Jičín together with partner schools from Spain, Poland and Iceland successfully completed the third year of the project „International ICT Competitions Ill for Increasing the Quality of Secondary Education”. This project, implemented under the Erasmus+ programme, built on successful initiatives from 2015-2018 and 2019-2022 and aimed to increase students’ ICT and English language skills.
The project included three international meetings: in November 2022 in the Czech Republic and Poland, in March 2023 in Spain and in October 2023 in Iceland. During these meetings, international competitions were held in which students competed in the use of an office suite, graphic design and editing, multimedia, 3D modelling, effective use of the internet and resource analysis. The international teams were always made up of two students from different countries, which contributed to the development of their communication skills in English and intercultural understanding.
An important part of the project was the school rounds of competitions, from which the top four students emerged to participate in international meetings. The outputs of the project, including examples and lesson preparations, have been produced in both written and electronic form – booklets – and are available on the project website
The first international meeting took place in November 2022 in Prague, Nový Jičín and Nowy Targ in Poland. Students visited Microsoft, famous Prague monuments, Pustevny, Zakopane, Krakow, thermal pools – Goracy potok and competed in international pairs in the use of office suite, data mining anddata analysis. The second meeting took place in March 2023 in Alcoy, Spain, where they held a competition in 3D printing and web design, visited local technological institutions, a video game museum and took part in the traditional Fallas festivities in Valencia. The third meeting took place in Iceland in October 2023, where students designed questionnaires and posters for fictional travel agencies, participated in workshops on T-shirt design and printing, and visited biotech companies, the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, Godafoss, Lake Mývatn with scenic phenomena, Námafjall the foot of a famous volcano, Reynisfjara – a black sand beach, Vatnajökull glacier.
During the project activities, Polish students achieved high results, in the first edition of the computer competition Piotr Tylka took first place together with Fridrik Alvin Haraldson Grankvist. The third edition of the competition was won by Mateusz Kobylarczyk together with Hugo Lucas Moncho. Regardless of the places they took in the competition, our students improved their computer and language skills, strengthened their interpersonal skills, and learned about the culture and customs in the countries of the project participants.
The project not only strengthened the students’ ICT and English skills, but also contributed to their personal growth. The students had the opportunity to live with host families, which improved their social skills and ability to adapt to new cultures. They also took part in various sports activities and learned about the cultural customs and traditions of the partner countries.
All important objectives of the project were met and thanks to these activities the partner schools became visible not only locally but also internationally. The project supported the educational objectives of the schools and strengthened their position in the local and regional community, which attracted the attention of parents, potential students and other educational institutions. All information and outputs of the project are available on the website
Videoconference of the International ICT Competition project
On 24 April 2024, a videoconference was held within the Erasmus+ project „International ICT competitions enhance the quality of secondary education”. The conference was held at the partner school in Nowy Targ, where the Czech school was also on a partner visit. The meeting was attended by representatives of the National Agency (NA), representatives of the partner schools from Spain, Poland and the Czech Republic, and other teachers. The project’s main coordinator presented the main results and achievements of the project, including the improvement of students’ ICT and English language skills, the successful organisation of international competitions and the acquisition of rich intercultural experiences by the students. Tomasz Misiur (representative and coordinator of the Polish school) introduced the official project website https://erasmuszst.pl/, where all information and materials related to the project are available. The website also serves as the main platform for dissemination of results. A brochure with examples of project activities and outputs was presented. The brochure contains inspiring examples such as the creation of presentations, online questionnaires, video tutorials, promotional websites, 3D souvenirs and school trip designs. Icelandic teacher Grétar Karlsson graphically showed the results of a questionnaire about the booklet, which provided valuable feedback from users. This feedback will be used to improve future materials. Analysis of the questionnaires completed by participants at each meeting provided an overview of participant satisfaction, their experiences and suggestions for improving future activities. These results were presented by Javier Cerrada López – coordinator from Spain. Strategies for dissemination of the project results were discussed. Different dissemination methods were presented, including articles on school websites, social media posts, information corners in schools and publications in local periodicals. The conference focused on presenting the project and its outputs. Representatives of each partner presented different aspects of the project in turn, which allowed participants to get a comprehensive overview of the results and experiences. The conference was combined, with an emphasis on project evaluation, but also included dissemination activities. Other partners were also invited to the meeting, especially those who were sent a booklet of examples. The conference was also recorded and part of the recording, describing the content of the results, especially the brochure, will be used for further dissemination of the project. During the visit of the Czech teachers and the conference, a proposal for the continuation of the project called „International ICT Competition IV” was also discussed to build on the successes to date and to increase cooperation between the schools involved. The videoconference was successful and contributed to further strengthening the cooperation between partners, exchange of experiences and planning of future activities of the Erasmus+ project. between partners, exchange of experiences and planning of future activities of the Erasmus+ project.
